Get your Kuumba on
The Harbourfront kicks off Black History Month with Kuumba, a free festival that includes dance, music, film and much more. Hit up the Kuumba market place for some worldly shopping, or if you’re more adventurous, try your hands at the Kuumba drumming circles.
Savour your Guilty Pleasures
Food and fashion collide for Guilty Pleasures, a three-course brunch at The Drake Hotel on Saturday. After downing the food with a few mimosas, peruse the jewellery, accessories and clothing pop-up shops, and even take part in a silent auction. We often get scorned for our indulgences, but for once, take a cheat day and leave with your belly full and your shopping bag packed. $38 per head.
BRRRRR beatz
Influenced by Montreal’s Igloofest, BRRRR!, Toronto’s first outdoor electronic festival, makes a two-day stop at Echo Beach this weekend. Featuring an artist lineup that includes Moby and Dubfire, the festival’s music should keep dancers’ feet pumping non-stop to keep them warm throughout the night. Though we still recommend you bring a parka.
Super Bowl Sunday Sound-Off
The NFL has been making a pretty big effort to expand its reach within Canada, and with that, it’s are bringing back the officially sponsored Super Bowl Party to the Sound Academy on — when else? — Super Bowl Sunday. If you’re going to catch a glimpse of the big game, you might as well do it around a crowd of like-minded (and jersey wearing) individuals.
It’s a free world. Really.
There was a time where bartering outweighed the outright exchange of money. And if you’ve just cynically muttered under your breath, “That will never happen again,” prepare to be blown away by the Really Really Free Market. Head over to Campbell Park on Saturday before 6 p.m., where you can pick up items literally for free. Though it couldn’t hurt to be a good sport and to contribute to this free economy by bringing in good, usable items for others to snag as well.
