When it was announced in February that European Quality Meats and Sausages would be closing its Kensington Market location, the obvious concern was that a big-box chain of some sort would open in its place. But the news has been only good since then: Sanagan’s Meat Locker is moving into European’s old spot, and now Leslieville’s much-lauded Hooked is opening a second fish store in Sanagan’s former digs.
“Kensington Market really makes sense,” says Hooked co-owner Kristin Donovan. “We love the idea of having a very small second store.”
Hooked has been a favourite of Toronto chefs since its opening in the east end last year, particularly for its steadfast dedication to sustainable fishing. Its second location will certainly make things interesting for Kensington, which is already rife with independent fishmongers.
Donovan says that Hooked’s second location should be open by September.
