Wanted: this made-in-Toronto leather varsity jacket

The benefits of buying locally produced garments are not to be underestimated. Sure, you probably won’t find a polyester dress for $20, but by paying a little more, you get the satisfaction of knowing that the things you adorn your body with are strengthening our local economy, won’t cause further environmental damage through the extensive use of transport energy and aren’t contributing to the proliferation of sweatshops.

Despite these benefits, buying domestically manufactured goods in Canada hasn’t always been easy. For reasons that are both obvious and depressing, fast fashion giants and department stores owned by multinationals dominate the retail landscape. But thanks to the Internet, and informative articles like the one you’re reading right now, reppin’ Toronto with your clothes can be as easy as clicking on a link or two.

Outclass is a menswear line designed and manufactured right here in Toronto. Uninterested in capturing the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it runway trends, founder and designer Matteo Sgaramella started the label in order to satisfy the demand for classic pieces with a modern twist, made from quality fabrics and durably crafted to stand the test of time. To put it simply, if you’re a sophisticated dude with an urban flair, or if you’re Drake, Outclass is the brand for you.

One of the coolest pieces from the fall/winter 2012 collection is this grey pilot bomber, now on sale for a very reasonable $325. Constructed in Canada, this jacket is made from 100 per cent wool in the body and 100 per cent leather sleeves. The varsity style is, despite not trying, very much on trend, and it’s perfect for back-to-school season.

Also available in black, this garment can be purchased directly through the Outclass website, and other Outclass gear can be found at stores such as Gerhard Supply in the Junction.

$325. Available at Outclass, 647-654-2474
