Ice Ice Baby
Most of us are looking forward to the spring, but a select few of us are hoping winter sticks around a little longer, especially for events like IceFest in Yorkville. Starting this Saturday, ice carvers will expertly cut down blocks of ice into various creatures of delight, including an “Enchanted Garden” display of gnomes, fairies and more. Bonus: it’s an all ages show, and it’s free.
And the Oscar goes to…
Gear up for Oscar weekend by joining the Etobicoke Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday for a concert that features some Academy Award-winning music. Among the recognizable titles are the introduction from Star Wars, the theme from Schindler’s List and some symphonic highlights from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Soak up Some Suds
Head over to The Only Cafe this weekend for a three-day beer fest, where you can sample some of the best local breweries. Each day has a different roster, so make sure to check the lineup to decide which day is best to engorge your mouth with frosty suds. And to make sure you have something to pair it with, Fidel Gastro’s will be making an appearance on Saturday and Sunday.
This is 30
Bad Dog Theatre Company (formerly known as Theatresports Toronto) is having a party and a performance at Comedy Bar to celebrate its 30th year on Saturday. Watch improvisers try to impress the crowd and judges, and also watch them try to dodge the infamous BOO brick (which may or may not actually be a brick). It’s literally a once in a lifetime experience, because we all know improv never repeats itself.
One last Hej då
Electronic trio Swedish House Mafia are doing one last tour, and there are still tickets available for the Feb. 22 show at the Rogers Centre. The venue may seem a little large for three people to fill out, but if you’ve seen the video for “Don’t You Worry Child,” you’ll realize that any other place in Toronto would actually be too small.
