Rare Lord of the Rings card found in Toronto, valued at millions

A retail worker from Toronto has a very precious trading card in his or her possession.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, an exclusive “One Ring” card designed for the tabletop game “Magic: The Gathering” is currently attracting offers surpassing $2-million US from collectors around the world.  If the card ultimately sells for this staggering amount, it would claim the title as one of the most expensive trading cards ever sold.

Recently, Wizards of the Coast,  the publisher of the collectible card game unveiled an anticipated addition to their universe — an official expansion on the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise. Amidst the millions of printed cards featuring beloved characters from Frodo and the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring to Saurons and Aragorns, the publisher included a one-of-a-kind card showcasing the infamous treasure – the One Ring.

While the identity of the person who pulled the trading card remains a mystery, the card owner told the CBC through the marketing and PR agency representing them that they were in shock.

“My hands were literally shaking. I could’t believe it was real,” they said in an email. “These things don’t happen to people like me.”

The reason for the mind-blowing price, is due to the rarity of the card — Hasbro told the Wall Street Journal that there was a less than 0.0003 per cent chance of finding it in the set. The card is described as a “traditional foil card printed in the Black Speech of Sauron” — one of Tolkien’s fictional languages.

“We are thrilled to hear tale of a new Ring-bearer in possession of the serialized 1:1 The One Ring! This journey is finished, but the adventure with #MTGxLOTR’s continues!” said a post on the Magic: The Gather’s Twitter account.

The One Ring card was authenticated on Friday morning by the grading company PSA, and given a “mint 9” grade.
Currently there are a few high-stakes offers on the table, including a US $1-million bid  from New York’s Dave & Adam’s, while Spanish gaming store Gremio de Dregones is offering $2.1 million for it.
