Toronto’s basketball icon Kyle Lowry is back in town and promises to retire in a Raptors uniform

The most popular player in Toronto Raptors history paid a visit to Scotiabank Arena last night as the Philadelphia 76ers are in town for two straight games.

As usual when he visits, Lowry took the time to reflect on his nine seasons with the team, and confirmed that he plans to sign a one-day contract and retire as a member of the Raptors when his NBA career comes to an end, likely after this season.

Lowry spent many years with Toronto and is regarded as the greatest player in franchise history. He played a central role in the Raptors’ 2019 NBA championship and became known as the emotional leader of the team during its most successful era.

The Raptors have retired only one jersey in franchise history, raising Vince Carter’s No. 15 to the rafters in November 2024. Lowry’s No. 7, which no player has dared wear since he left, is expected to be the next jersey honoured once he officially retires.

Even after years away from the team, Lowry has maintained a strong connection to Toronto, frequently returning to the city and openly showing his love to the Raptors organization and its fans.

To this day, when Lowry returns to the city, the fans shower him with adoration. It helps that Lowry gives it right back. For example, last night he showed up for the game dressed in an Austin Matthews Maple Leafs jersey.

Lowry will be back in uniform again tonight, although unlikely to play, as the Raptors play the 76ers again in a rare back-to-back home stand. Tip-off is at 7p.m.
