With the CNE kicking off this Friday, the buzz is palpable for the wild and wacky foods about to hit the scene. As the gates swing open and the crowds pour in, we’re all gearing up for a wild and wacky food showdown! Luckily, our social media host Tiana got a jumpstart and sampled some of the craziest new eats before the frenzy begins!
Here’s the lowdown on what’s hot and what’s not from her sneak peek.
The Hits
1. Wasabi Ice Cream – CAF-EH T.O.
According to Tiana, even though you wouldn’t think it, this spicy creation from Cat-eh T.O. was somewhat palatable. “There’s always a weird ice cream flavour that you have to try every year at the CNE. Last year it was cheeseburger and I was not a fan of that. And I definitely think some sushi would have made this taste better.”
2. Deep fried cheese curds: Taylor’s Version – King of Curds
Tiana said these deep fried cheese curds were “super glittery and fun and had a great cheese pull.” Along with also tasting great, they even came with a Tylor Swift bracelet!
3. Jalapeño Lemonade — Alijandro’s Kitchen
Tiana expected the worse when it came to this sizzling lemonade but it turned out to be one of her favourites. “It was really spicy but not overpowering and really refreshing,” she says. “I actually finished the whole thing because it was so delicious; like a citrusy spicy marg!”
4. Super Fly Noodles — Super Noodle Co.
Who would have thought instant noodles could taste so good? “Presentation-wise, it was great and a nice portion,” Tiana said. Plus, you get your choice of protein and unlimited toppings. “There was a lot of squid and sausage and the noodles were done really well.”
5. Deep Fried Butter Chicken Lasagna — Rick’s Good Eats
“The Lasagna we well made and had a nice crisp exterior and was soft on the inside,” Tiana said of this butter chicken lasagna remix. “It was that feel food lasagna that you like with that dip fried festival type of crunch.”
The Misses
1. Deep Fried Pickle Oreos — Sam’s Grill
Tiana was definitely not a fan of this odd pairing. “I couldn’t wrap my head around this one,” she said. “There are pickles inside the cream part of the two Oreos and they are battered fried with a vanilla sauce and dill. It felt like something was curdling in my stomach.”
2. Tenders Coated in cereal & snacks — Lucky Chicken
“To have fruity cereal on chicken tenders was strange but still palatable but what really made it too much for me to handle was the key lime dipping sauce”, Tiana told us. “It was this weird, neon, snotty kind of green with a gooey thick consistency that was way too sweet.”
