Fireball shuts down Caplansky's deli

Popular College Street deli Caplansky’s was closed yesterday after, well, you have to read it to believe it.

Caplansky published a full account of the sordid ordeal on his personal blog.

Long story short, a shady technician tried installing a used gas fryer. Something goes awry resulting in a fireball, a burned technician, a fire extinguisher being used, fire department, Ministry of Labour, EMS, police and Toronto Public Health converge on the scene with the final result seeing another technician being cuffed and escorted out of Caplansky’s, and the restaurant being shut down for the day to clean up the mess.

Just another day in the cured meat trade, I suppose. Ahem.

Caplansky’s Deli first opened as a small kitchen outpost in the suspect Monarch Tavern environs where owner Zane Caplansky established a reputation for his purist approach to deli foods.

He opened his first restaurant at 356 College St. last year, at a location that was formerly his great grandfather’s hardware store.
