The founder of Rewind on designer resale and surviving the pandemic without a website

Dawn Librach of Rewind

Dawn Librach opened Rewind Couture Revisited right out of school and had to scale up to a store four times the size of the original within one year. Her success stemmed from her background in the industry. She had learned the tricks of the shopping and resale trade from her grandmother, and quickly identified a niche for the store that would help it stand out from the crowd.

“We do a highly curated collection, so we’re very selective in terms of brands and styles we accept,” she says. “At Rewind, it’s really a one-on-one experience, so we always try to make sure every customer leaves with an outfit they can feel good about.”

rewind

Librach says that prior to COVID-19, she and the team would visit people’s closets and offer cash in exchange for the pieces that caught her eye, but during the pandemic she’s had to pivot her business model to take a virtual approach.

“Before, we had more customers in store, but now we really utilize our Instagram, which people love in comparison to a website because it’s instant,” she says. “We only have one of each item, so we mark it on our Instagram that if you want it, you have to call in right away to get it. In some months, we’ve actually been busier than before the pandemic.”

Librach says her passion for resale fashion stems from the element of sustainability it brings, but also because resale items are often much higher quality than what you’d find in a fast fashion outlet. She says she’s seeing a huge uptick in this style of shopping, and she would encourage anyone who’s passionate about resale to pursue it as a career or side hustle.

“Especially the way the world is right now, everyone is shopping resale,” she says. “Always follow your dreams and if you have a passion, you should go for it.”

New ice cream shop in Toronto turns old classics into frozen custard desserts

Creamery X in Toronto turns classic recipes into new custard frozen ice cream. While COVID-19 has set many businesses back, for creative entrepreneurs Bonnie Gallant and Melissa Baird, the pandemic has given them time to think — about frozen custard and vegan ice cream flavours.

“Sometimes we think of flavours in the middle of the night. We dream of making ice cream!” says Gallant.

When owners Gallant and Baird realized that one loves to bake and the other loves ice cream, Creamery X was born.

“Funny enough, we started Creamery X last fall on a passing conversation. We were talking about how much Bonnie loves ice cream and Melissa loves to bake, and dreaming about how fun it would be to create our own flavours. The passing thought turned into diving into research about ice cream machines and the science behind it and before we knew it our freezer was full of various ice cream test recipes,” Gallant says.

“We have a list of flavour combinations we’d love to create that just keeps growing. We tinker with classic desserts to find ways to make them unique, like our hipster butterscotch. We focus on flavours we love — sweet and savoury — and how we can change them and put them in ice cream, like fig and lemon goat cheese. We’re just always throwing around ideas — any time we see something we wonder if we can make it into an ice cream,” Gallant says.

Selling frozen custard and vegan ice cream in the middle of the winter mid-pandemic may seem like an impossible feat, but the duo has been creative with takeaway pints and boxes filled with treats.

“We’re always releasing new stuff — our next release will be ice cream squares (sandwiches). They’re launching in the coming weeks. We’re also working on a birthday box, and release on average one to three new flavours per month,” Gallant says.

The last Valentine’s box the team created included luxe candles, candies, and delicious custard or vegan pints, so the upcoming birthday boxes will surely be something to look forward to.

Find Creamery X at 124 Jarvis St. between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday evenings. Pints are sold until there are no more left and this is small batch custom stuff, so the new flavours sell out quickly.

As a result of ongoing COVID-19 infection rates, St. Patrick’s Day festivities have been cancelled across Toronto, including the St. Patrick’s Day parade for the second year in a row. With restaurants still closed for indoor dining, it also means that the traditional St. Paddy’s pub crawls are also off the menu.

Although you won’t be able to pull up a barstool and enjoy a freshly-poured pint of Guinness and a side of Irish nachos, some pubs are offering takeout instead. Here are five St. Patrick’s Day takeout spots that will ensure your at-home festivities include a taste of Ireland.

Stout Irish Pub

St. Paddy’s Day groups may not be grabbing a spot at this tavern’s tables just yet, but Stout Irish Pub, located in Cabbagetown, is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day nonetheless. The cozy pub, known for its impressive beer and bottle shop and savoury meat pies, is offering a St. Patrick’s Day Special for pick-up or delivery. For $60, you can get two beef and Irish Stout pies, bangers with caramelized onions, peas and baked beans, colcannon (buttered mashed potatoes with kale and baked with cheddar) and Stout’s house salad dressed with balsamic vinaigrette. This feast feeds two people, and for an extra $18, you can wash it all down with a six-pack of Louis Cifer lager or Dry Irish Stout.

Richmond Hill restaurant launches new spice line

sanjeev masala co.

Ashish Sethi’s new venture, Sanjeev Masala Co., is a tribute to his late father. After emigrating to Canada in the 1980s from India, Sanjeev Sethi opened his first restaurant, the Host Fine Indian Cuisine, with his brother in 1996. The pair went on to launch five restaurants, including a much-loved outpost in Richmond Hill, and found the Host Hospitality Group, of which Ashish is now director of food and beverage.

When Sanjeev passed away in 2019, Ashish wanted to find a way to honour his father’s culinary talent and generosity.

“He had a lot of knowledge and his recipes are quite authentic,” says Ashish. “The processes he took to make his masalas — sourcing each individual spice and roasting them at different times — it was something very special.”

Ashish says that Sanjeev considered selling his masala blends in the past, but the project was never fully realized.

“It’s finishing one of the things he never got to finish,” says Ashish. “It’s one of the first ways we wanted to commemorate him.”

Sanjeev Masala Co. will soon launch its first masala kit, a collection of five masala spice blends developed from the recipes Sanjeev used at the Host’s restaurants.

“We even use the exact same double spice grinder that he used,” says Ashish. “There’s a chai masala that’s really good for tea and desserts; a biryani masala that’s good for curries and spiced rice; and dhaniya jeera is a more authentic masala that we use every day,” he explains, adding that the kit also includes a basic garam masala and a tandoori masala.

“It’s what you need to start Indian cooking,” he says. The Sanjeev Masala Co. site includes cooking tips and recipes to help guide those who are new to working with masalas.

As part of the project, a new foundation has also been established in Sanjeev’s name. A portion of sales from the masala kits are being donated towards various charitable organizations that the Host has worked with in the past, including Trillium Health Partners, World Vision and the William Osler Foundation. Ashish says they’ve already raised more than $2,000 for the foundation from pre-sales of the kits.

“I think this was a good way to do two things that he always wanted to do,” says Ashish. “We wanted to find a way to give back to the community in his way but also preserve his recipes and his way of life,” he adds, noting that his father had always quietly made charitable donations and given free meals to the city’s homeless population over the years. Creating the kits has also helped keep much of the Host’s long-time staff employed amid the dining room closures.

Ashish says that Sanjeev had developed almost 30 different masala blends, which Sanjeev Masala Co. plans to gradually release in the coming months, along with tandoori marinades and sauces.

“There’s a lot that goes into an Indian pantry,” he says. “We want to make everything that was available in his kitchen available to everyone else.”

Local brand creates inclusive swimwear to empower trans girls

0

Bathing suit shopping can be anxiety-inducing at the best of times, for those of all shapes and sizes. The experience can be even more stressful for parents in search of swimwear for young girls that offers both comfort and adequate coverage. Yet another layer of apprehension gets piled onto the process, however when it comes to swimwear for trans girls, something Jamie Alexander learned firsthand – and what inspired him to start Rubies, an inclusive Canadian brand specializing in creating form-fitting clothing for trans girls.

The idea stemmed from his daughter, Ruby, a trans girl who just wanted to fit in with and be as comfortable as her friends. Alexander had anxiety around how Ruby could safely wear form-fitting clothing so for a while he and Ruby opted for board shorts for swimming and sweatpants for gymnastics. A trip to Panama spurred him on further to find the right fit for her that wouldn’t compromise style.

Rubies swimwear

“We were planning a trip to Panama and were concerned about what Ruby would be able to wear at the beach. Instead of wearing a bikini that she wanted we had her wear board shorts,” he explains. “When I returned I started searching for options and found them very lacking. Once I realized there were limited options I went for it.”

And so, Rubies was born in the spring of 2020. He describes the feedback received so far as amazing.

“It feels really good to be able to make a real difference in people’s lives, especially those in the trans community and parents of trans girls,” he says. “They are so excited that someone is designing products for their children. They see both the work I am doing as a role model for other dads and that Ruby has been able to inspire their children.”

Alexander now has plans to further expand internationally as well as work on new products like underwear and bikini tops.

Rubies also runs the campaign, Every Girl Deserves to Shine, dedicated to providing free swimwear to families in need. In addition, with every purchase, Rubies includes handwritten postcards by trans and non-binary children and their allies with positive messages for the receiver.

New Mexican restaurant from Playa Cabana team arrives at Yonge and Eglinton

Bar Esquina

Mas Playas, the Mexican chain of eateries known for high-end tacos and cocktails, is opening another Toronto location this time in the Yonge and Eglinton area.

Playa Cabana Bar Esquina will join the Mas Playas roster that includes the original Playa Cabana in the Annex, as well as Cantina in the Junction, Barrio Coreano in Koreatown and Hacienda on Dupont.

Esquina, which showcases the same trendy and fashionable vibe as the other locations, set up shop at midtown’s busiest intersection. The decor includes brightly coloured tables and chairs, high ceilings, cement walls with multi-coloured murals and stained glass windows. The restaurant frontage invites passersby with oversized, floor-to-ceiling windows. Once construction at Eglinton Station is completed, visitors will be able to walk directly into the restaurant in addition to its street entrance.

“We chose the location because it’s a young, trendy and up-and-coming area, and there aren’t a lot of Mexican restaurants nearby,” says Karon Johnson, manager at Bar Esquina. “It’s an area we really believe in.”

Of course, with the city of Toronto currently in lockdown, diners have not been allowed to take in the atmosphere of Esquina, but the outpost is getting established thanks to takeout and delivery options.

“We provide a great facility, hand-off is seamless with COVID precautions in mind,” Johnson says.

The dinner menu, similar to all of the Mas Playas locations, includes favourites such as burritos, ceviche and guacamole, but also offers up house specialties: Enchiladas Suiza, Tres Tacos Suaves (three soft tacos), Tres Tacos Chorreados (three crispy tacos with cheese) and Postres.

“We try to be as authentically Mexican as we can be,” Johnson says.

Esquina is the only eatery in the Mas Playas family that currently serves lunch. The menu is served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, and includes two tacos with rice and beans, as well as burrito options and a plato bowl. For takeout, they also offer beer and half-litres or litres of the renowned Dave’s Margaritas.

Playa Cabana Bar Esquina is located at 8 Eglinton Ave. E., and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Orders can be placed via delivery apps, on the restaurant’s website, or by walking in.

Legendary Carlo’s Bakery set to open first Canadian location this spring

Carlo's Bakery Rainbow Cake

The GTA is finally getting its own Carlo’s Bakery. Yes, the city has had its Cake Boss vending machines for a while now, but soon the first outpost in Canada will open in Port Credit.

Since 1910, Carlo’s Bakery has been serving up sweet treats for Hoboken, New Jersey, and the greater New York City area. The bakery’s fame wouldn’t extend outside of Hoboken and New York City until the TV crew came to town and launched Cake Boss.

The hit TV show turned Carlo’s Bakery into a world-famous enterprise and, immediately, metal fencing went up outside the shop to keep international visitors in an orderly lineup on the sidewalk. They rolled out merchandise ranging from coffee cups and plates to T-shirts and sweaters and, as a thank you to Hoboken residents, installed a program allowing those with a piece of Hoboken ID to skip the sometimes lengthy line of tourists.

Then, they began expanding into other cities, opening outposts in New York City proper, Las Vegas, and Santa Monica. And now Buddy Valastro’s bakery is coming to Canada.

A post shared by Carlo’s Bakery (@carlosbakery)

Until this announcement, Cake Boss fans had to settle for shipping the sweet treats or purchasing them out of vending machines across the GTA. Now, though, Carlo’s Bakery will have a storefront at 167 Lakeshore Road West.

“We are so excited to bring our world-famous desserts to Canada with a retail bakeshop and becoming part of the community,” said Valastro in a press release. “My father would be so proud to know his traditional recipes are making their way up to Canada. Hoboken Style North, baby!”

No opening date has officially been announced.

Dallas Green just launched a fundraiser alongside Raptors coach Nick Nurse

Toronto singer-songwriter Dallas Green has had a long career in music, recording dozens of hit singles under the name City and Colour and as part of the band Alexisonfire. Now, he’s giving back to the community by teaming up with Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse in support of the Nick Nurse Foundation, an organization devoted to helping youth balance academics with other passions like music and sports.

In celebration of the foundation’s one-year anniversary, Green and Nurse have collaborated on a limited edition hoodie that comes in three colours: pink, black and white, and sports a funky illustration representing Green’s love for music and Nurse’s career in basketball.

One hundred per cent of the proceeds of the hoodie will go towards the Indspire City and Colour Indigenous Student Bursary, which helps First Nations, Inuit and Métis students accomplish their educational goals.

“It’s incredible to see what Nick has done for the community and the impact he’s had,” Green says. “I’m very happy to be able to lend some of my time to the great foundation that him and his team started.”

The Nick Nurse Foundation was established in January 2020 to support children and youth in their personal and academic development, and help them achieve their full potential. Nurse says he’s proud to be partnering with Green on the initiative, and that charitable causes have always been close to his heart.

“Super excited about this collaboration with Dallas and City and Colour,” Nurse says. “I’m honoured to be able to give back and support the community, it’s always been important to me.”

In recent years, Green has devoted more of his time to charitable causes, raising $175,000 for Black organizations including Black Lives Matter Canada this past summer.

The limited edition Nick Nurse x City and Colour hoodie is available for pre-sale now at cityandcolour.store for $70.

Toronto talent is being recognized in the Best Music Video category at this year’s Grammys. The video for “Life is Good” by Future (right) featuring Drake (left) received a nomination and it was directed by Toronto’s own Julien Christian Lutz, better known as Director X.

The music video — which features both rappers picking up trash, working as mechanics, baking cakes and serving fast food — grew to huge popularity and currently has more than 1.6 billion views on YouTube. Director X, who also makes a cameo in the video, says the concept was Drake’s idea.

The Grammys were postponed this year and will be airing Sunday, March 14. Drake is also nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his song “Laugh Now Cry Later,” featuring Lil Durk.

Drake also made headlines recently for his new music video for “What’s Next” which also features him in various spots around the city such as Yonge and Dundas Square and on the TTC.

This time he worked with director Theo Skudra who thanked every member of the crew in a recent Instagram post for getting the video completed in a short turnaround time.

Also, Drake and Director X will not be the only Torontonians celebrating their Grammy nominations this weekend. Lido Pimienta is nominated for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album for her album titled Miss Colombia.

“The Grammys, in general, is like this weird, non-accessible-to-art thing, like it just seems so big,” Pimienta said in a recent interview with Trnto.com. “It was very surprising. But I wasn’t shocked because I already kind of went over the Latin Grammy thing [which she was also nominated for], so I mean, it’s cool. I hope I win. I feel like I deserve it.”

The awards were scheduled to be presented Jan. 31, but were postponed to this Sunday, March 14, 2021.
