Rawlicious, a vegan eatery that got its start in the Junction, has brought its cool, uncooked fare to Yorkville. The question is: Will dishes served at 118 degrees Fahrenheit or less receive a warm reception in the upscale neighbourhood?
Owner Angus Crawford says they already have.
In the Junction, Rawlicious was a destination spot for a lot of diners. Establishing a second location in Yorkville made sense because the vibrant neighbourhood is more central to the city, he explains.
The thinking behind a raw diet is that food starts to lose nutritional value when cooked at higher temperatures.
"We want to serve very healthy, delicious meals to people," Crawford tells PostCity.com.
Not only is the food raw, but it’s organic, too. There’s no meat, wheat, dairy, gluten or refined sugar either.
But, as he points out, "It’s not just carrot sticks and celery sticks."
The ingredients may not be conventional, but the menu has renditions of popular restaurant dishes, including pizza, pad Thai and wraps. (Wraps are served in collard greens instead of the standard tortilla).
In addition to salads, smoothies and juices, there’s also a complete dessert list, with cheesecake, brownies and more.
Crawford says he would like to open additional locations in hopes of making raw foodism more mainstream.
