Yorkville disses hot dogs, becomes even snootier

While hamburgers are still cool In Toronto, hot dogs are out, apparently. So out, in fact, that they’ve been booted from the Mink Mile. According to the Sun, The Bloor-Yorkville BIA says hot dog carts don’t fit in with Bloor Street’s newly renovated vibe.

Bloor Street’s plush new improvements include planters, granite sidewalks and 100 trees to be planted this spring. Apparently, the new landscaping means vendor carts no longer comply with bylaws, so vendors’ permits won’t be renewed.

“We’re not making any bones about the fact that this was done to be an enhancement to the pedestrian environment,” Briar de Lange, executive director of the Bloor-Yorkville BIA, told the Sun of Bloor’s recent improvements. “Sticking a cart in the middle of it doesn’t make any sense.”

Vendors, as expected, aren’t happy and are hoping that city council will let them stay. Disgruntled hot dog fans voiced their concerns – where else? – on Twitter.

“That’s a travesty! i’m gonna pelt hot dogs at sassafraz in protest!” one Tweeter wrote. “Who says I can’t pick up Gucci shoes and a frikkin hot dog?!?” wrote another.

And, when haute hot dogs become Toronto’s next silly craze, Yorkville’s no doubt going to be wallowing in some serious remorse.
