When it comes to the NFL, Canadian representation is slim. A player here, a player there. One of the finest examples of a Canuck making it big in the NFL is Steve Christie, one of the most successful kickers in league history. With this weekend’s Super Bowl festivities, one can’t help but think of the Oakville native with the record-setting boot.

In the ’92 NFL playoffs, Christie became the first place-kicker in NFL history to recover his own onside kick, a feat unmatched to this day. Then, to cap it off, he kicked a field goal in overtime to win the game and complete an incredible comeback win after the team fell behind 35 to 3 in the third quarter. 

Christie also holds the record for the longest field goal ever made in a Super Bowl when he chipped in a 54-yard gem in a losing effort to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII.

These days, Christie is working as a CFL player agent with his own firm, Relative Goal Sports Management, and also sells real estate near his home in St. Petersburg, Fla., where the market is ready to make a comeback.

“It is definitely starting to pick up,” he says. “The snowbirds are back and it is a lot better.”

Christie deals with a lot of clients from southern Ontario as well as New York state — the cold regions. In addition, he has a growing roster of football players he represents — not surprisingly, almost all are kickers.

“I guess that’s what happened, pretty obvious why,” says Christie. “I just seem to be able to sign them.”

Christie resides in St. Petersburg with his wife and three children.
