Weekend Warrior: Righteous riffs, blushing brides, super psychics and more on our weekend to-do

1. Slap da bass with The Weeknd

Edgy, sultry and Polaris Prize-nominated R&B artist The Weeknd is scoping out new players to join the band. Only Torontonians (bass players and guitarists) who can riff righteously will have an opportunity to travel and perform alongside well-versed crooner Abel Tesfaye. It’s the ultimate wet dream for starving artists. The deadline to apply is Jan. 8.

2. The mother of all bridal shows

January may be known as “divorce month” (especially if your holidays resembled the Griswold’s vacation), but Canada’s Bridal Show caters to the engagements that went down over the holidays. Glean tips and tricks on everything you need to know about planning a wedding from the experts, and even find the perfect gown at the fashion show (the soundtrack of which, we hope, will be wedding classics from The Isley Brothers and the Village People).

3. Hobos, robbers and a waltz

TIFF Bell Lightbox presents Canada’s top 10 films. Movie buffs, filmmakers and critics, including The Toronto Star’s Peter Howell, have compiled the list, which features A Dangerous Method, Keyhole and Take This Waltz. Major points awarded to those who don’t need to watch Jason Eisner’s Hobo With a Shotgun hidden behind partially closed hands. So grab some popcorn and let the good times reel. The films will screen at TIFF Bell Lightbox from Jan. 5-15 with special guest speakers.

4. Calling all the Susan Boyles of Toronto

If you’ve ever wanted to show off your juggling-while-tap-dancing skills, here is your chance. This week, Canada’s Got Talent announced it will be holding last-chance auditions via its YouTube channel through Jan. 15. Voters will choose the top 20 routines, and one lucky winner will head to the semifinals to compete. Here at Post City, we’re pondering how to combine our talents, which include a roller derbyist, a drummer, a guild leader and a dodgeballer. But we’re just in it to meet judge Martin Short.

5. Insight and brunch: an unbeatable combo

Will the world come to an end in 2012 as the Mayans predicted? Will you stick to your New Year’s resolutions? Find the answer to these and more from the city’s clairvoyants at the Psychic Brunch on Jan. 8 in Bloor West Village and Cabbagetown. For nearly a decade, psychics, tarot card readers and channelers (um, what?) have gathered to shed some light on what the future holds. For the believers: get some answers. For the skeptics: brunch will follow. No need to register, they’ll probably know you’re coming anyway.
