Last Chance at Backbeat
Labour Day weekend marks the symbolic farewell of more than just summer. Backbeat, the story chronicling the birth and rise of The Beatles, will come to a close on Sunday after what has been a successful, critically acclaimed run. Be sure to catch the musical this weekend, because it “must close Sept. 2.”
Taking to the Skies
For all the new experiences The Ex has served up over the past two weeks, Labour Day weekend represents time for an old classic: the Canadian International Air Show. The 63rd annual CNE staple will feature dynamic, death-defying and awe-inspiring acrobatic air tricks from some of Canada’s most experienced and skilled pilots.
Viva Brazil!
Yonge and Dundas will be awash in green and yellow come Labour Day Monday in celebration of Brazilian Day Canada. The local celebration of Brazil’s Independence Day will feature dancers, costumes, a free concert, a street fair and a massive “Samba in the Square.”
T.O. Goes Old School
Music fans will have several decades of rock to choose from this weekend. Things get started early, with Roxette and Glass Tiger at the Molson Amphitheatre on Thursday. On Friday, ’90s hit-makers The Tea Party will be on the Midway stage at the CNE, while The Cult will bring their brand of goth rock to the Phoenix Concert Theatre. Finally, on Sunday, concert-goers will get their choice between a trip to Echo Beach to see The Offspring or a visit to the Sound Academy to check out Public Enemy.
Music at a Crossroads
If Brazil Day will bring a visual spectacle to Yonge-Dundas Square, the INTERsection music festival will offer an auditory infusion of innovative, cutting edge, contemporary music. On Saturday, the Square will host an eight-hour “New Music Marathon” headlined by the Bang On a Can All-Stars. On Sunday, they will celebrate the music of Brian Eno at The Music Gallery.
