Trustees to challenge city council seats

Two Toronto School board trustees recently announced their intention to run for city council in the next municipal elections slated for Oct. 25.

James Pasternak, Toronto District School Board trustee will run in York Centre (Ward 10) and Rob Daivs, Toronto Catholic District School Board trustee will challenge for Eglinton-Lawrence (Ward 15).

Ward 10 is currently represented by Coun. Mike Feldman, and Ward 15 by Coun. Howard Moscoe. Both candidates said they will focus on fiscal responsibility, community safety and on small day-to-day city operations, including garbage service.

“We’re on the road to financial paralysis,” Pasternak said. “That’s clear. Our infrastructure is falling apart and in need of urgent repair and upgrade.”

Pasternak said that re-establishing a good working relationship with the city’s school boards is also a priority. “The city’s been fairly dismissive of the school board,” he said. “We don’t get the co-operation we need from the city, and I want to re-start that relationship, and make sure it’s positive and productive.”

While they praised the jobs done by incumbents Feldman and Moscoe, both Pasternak and Davis agreed it is time for fresh ideas. “There’s definitely a want for change among people who live in Toronto,” Davis said. “My campaign is not about Howard Moscoe. My campaign is about serving the people of the city of Toronto and of Ward 15.” Coun. Moscoe has confirmed that he will run again, while Coun. Feldman is undecided.
