Toronto’s Charlie’s Burgers, the mysterious cloak-and-dagger anti-restaurant and Bar Chef have been named two of the top 100 new food experiences in the world by Food & Wine magazine in their May 2010 issue.
Of Charlie’s Burgers, which nabbed the number three position under the "new word of-mouth supper clubs" category, the article states "Expect a quiz ("What would your last meal on earth be?") when you e-mail for a seat and guest chefs at each meal."
Mr. Burger responded to the nod by saying, "I am thrilled that CB has been given the #3 spot. Especially given the caliber of the other titans listed in the F&W article such as Ferran Adria, David Chang, Frank Bruni, Grant Achatz and Kate Krader. It is amazing to be part of such a prestigious and globally recognized publication. Now if the Michelin Guide could somehow award us Three Michelin stars I could die happy."
Frankie Solarik’s Bar Chef landed in the 86th position, and included a cool photo of Solarik working a blowtorch for one of his groovy experimental cocktails. The article states that "Chicago chef Grant Achatz loves the $45 smoked Manhattan, made by setting the drink over smoldering, vanilla-infused hickory chips."
Sure, Toronto may suck at sports, but we are upping our culinary game to epic levels. No other Canadian city made it on the list.
