NYC’s Alibi Jewelry makes its way to Toronto

Local jewellery junkies looking for the next adorable-yet-affordable set of baubles may be interested to learn that Alibi, an acclaimed New York City jewellery line, recently partnered with its first-ever international distributor last week: Toronto’s own Magic Pony boutique.

The whimsical jewellery collection, which counts Kelly Ripa and Fergie as fans, was founded by Jo Liu, who opened Alibi Jewelry in New York’s Nolita neighbourhood last year to critical acclaim. Liu was looking to expand her collection outside of New York, and after visiting Toronto last summer, fell in love with the city (“the people there are really friendly,” she says. “It’s a comfortable, home-y place”). Magic Pony was the perfect fit. “I’ve bought from their store before myself,” Liu says, adding sheepishly: “I’m a huge toy dork. I bought their miniature food toys and kid robots.”

“We’re always looking for new and interesting pieces to bring into Magic Pony,” owner Kristin Weckworth tells us. “We loved Alibi’s amazing sense of design and the quirky details they incorporate into their line.” Those “quirky” include details skulls, daggers, and dinosaurs, which fits right in with the charming eccentricity fans of Magic Pony love. Plus, “everything is made from hand, which is really important to us.”

The jewellery, which is unusual enough to stand out against a plain tee during the day and sophisticated enough to complement a cocktail dress at night, comes in sterling silver, yellow gold and rose gold.

Weckworth’s must-have piece for the fall: the edge rings, which come in singles or pairs. Liu’s tip for the upcoming season: layering and “stackables. Braclets, rings. Rose gold is also very popular lately.”

In just under a month, “we’ve gotten a great response so far,” says Weckworth, so you know what that means: when you get to Magic Pony, you better stack up.
