Weekend Warrior: Toronto Wing Festival, Science Rendezvous, Spirit of Toronto, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, Mother’s Day Tea

Toronto Wing Festival

When: May 10
Where: 99 Sudbury, 99 Sudbury St.
Details: The Toronto Wing Festival is back for its second year to crown the 2013 Wing King. Hard Rock Cafe won the ultimate wing challenge last year, and this year they’re defending their title against The Right Wing Sports Pub, Whistler’s, Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery, Drums N Flats and others. Join host Bob Blumer (Food Network Canada’s The Surreal Gourmet, Glutton for Punishment) for all-you-can-eat wings and live music. Organized by The Rotary Club of Toronto Skyline, all proceeds from the event go to support the club’s charitable activities.


Science Rendezvous Festival

When: May 11
Where: Yonge-Dundas Square and multiple locations
Details: Partnered with dozens of Canada’s top universities and research institutions, Science Rendezvous is a non-profit organization bringing science and the public together in nationwide science fairs. Hundreds of science-related events will take place across the country, showcasing world-class Canadian scientific research. In Toronto, Ryerson will host free shows and activities at Yonge-Dundas Square, including a radio-controlled robot battle and a liquid nitrogen show hosted by Dan Riskin of Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet.


Spirit of Toronto

When: May 11
Where: Roy Thomson Hall, 60 Simcoe St.
Details: Enjoy a selection of over 100 single malts and premium spirits while listening to live jazz at the ninth annual Spirit of Toronto Whisky Gala at Roy Thomson Hall. Highlights of the night include a dozen tutored tastings on whisky and fine spirits, a prix fixe menu from Daniel et Daniel and an outdoor poolside cigar bar.


The Toronto Comic Arts Festival

When: May 11-12
Where: Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St.
Details: Forget comic-cons and cosplay and leave your spandex and sabers at home — this is not your average comic book fair. This week-long festival celebrates comics and graphic novels as a legitimate medium with artistic merit. Visitors can mingle with hundreds of comic creators from around the world in events that include art installations, gallery shows, workshops and a two-day exhibition and vendor fair.


Mother’s Day Tea

When: May 11-12
Where: Various locations
Details: Mother’s Day is this Sunday, Toronto will be celebrating with Mother’s Day tea events around the city. St. Lawrence Market (92-95 Front St. East) will be hosting a how-to on making tea time classics like cream scones and finger sandwiches, and the Gibson House (5172 Yonge St.) takes you back in time with afternoon tea in their mid-19th century parlour, complete with costumed hosts. Other locations with Mother’s Day tea events are Montgomery’s Inn (4709 Dundas St. West), Toronto Botanical Garden (777 Lawrence Ave. East) and Black Creek Pioneer Village (1000 Murray Ross Parkway).
