Rendezvous with Madness
Mental illness and addiction are two topics that aren’t easily addressed. But for 20 years, the Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival has brought the subject to the public. Each film provides a look into mental illness, with highlights including King Curling and William Kurelek’s The Maze. Opening this weekend, the festival runs until Nov. 17.
Fill the hockey void
The NHL lockout rages on, but there will be a chance to feel whole again — temporarily at least — during the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Induction Weekend. Grab some merch, watch Stanley’s Game Seven (3D), attend a fan forum or watch the Hockey Legends game, in which this year’s four inductees (Pavel Bure, Adam Oates, Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin) will play. The induction ceremony itself isn’t until Monday, but a weekend of hockey counts for something, right?
Get a (whole) life
Halloween and Thanksgiving have come and gone, so perhaps it’s time to clean up your act before Christmas sets in. Taking place this weekend, the Whole Life Expo is all about healthier living. With over 200 exhibitors, it’s Canada’s largest showcase of natural health, alternative medicine and eco-friendly lifestyles. Grab some samples, browse organic markets and learn about green living resources. The expo features 75 speakers on a range of topics, including past lives.
Illuminate your holiday spirit
Pop over to Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday for some winter magic during Illuminite. Among the holiday installations at the square are a 40-foot light tree with more then 52,000 LED lights, plus, there will be 3D polar bears (what would a winter festival be without those?). Also, pyrotechnics.
Laughing + beer = good times
Comedy Bar hosts BeerProv All-Stars, comedy improv event featuring Second City alum, Canadian Comedy Award winners and some local up-and-coming artists as they battle it out for a chance to drink from the coveted BeerProv Mug of Champions. Colin Mochrie (Who’s Line Is It Anyway?) will also be there, fighting to become a two-time BeerProv Champ.
