Weekend Warrior: Maple Leaf Monster Jam, Catapla, An Evening of Molecular Cuisine, a Gordon Lightfoot tribute, Shen Yun

Monster Jam

Quiet, subtle and peaceful is everything the Maple Leaf Monster Jam Tour is not. Those looking for a thrill that requires earplugs should head over to the Rogers Centre this weekend, where more than a few cars should end up literally flat on their backs.

Drama on the High Seas

The award-winning Catapla, playing this weekend at Theatre Passe Muraille, follows the true story of a band of Irish expatriates scheming to sell a whaling ship to an Australian prison in order to free six political prisoners. The hook? The story is told from the perspective of an aspiring screenwriter who wishes to turn the adventure into a movie. Head over for the matinee on Saturday, when the show is pay-what-you-can.

Foodie Science

This event is for you, foodie nerds. Chef John Placko, Culinary Director of the Modern Culinary Academy, takes you through An Evening of Molecular Cuisine, including reverse spherification, rapid freezing and sous-vide cooking.

Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot

The 11th annual The Way We Feel: a Celebration of Gordon Lightfoot features classic songs by the Canadian icon performed by various artists over the weekend at Hugh’s Room. They'll certainly need the full three days, because Lightfoot's catalogue is deep and extensive.

Chinese Celebration

With over 5,000 years of cultural and artistic inspiration to draw from, the award-winning Shen Yun Performing Arts production comes to The Sony Centre to present an interactive look at classical Chinese dance and music. If you were even slightly impressed with the opening ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, then this journey through history should be awe-inspiring.
