Mike Goldbach studied at Toronto’s Canadian Film Centre, where he impressed Canadian filmmaking heavyweight Don McKellar with a screenplay he had written.
“The screenplay was about a substitute teacher who began poisoning the regular teacher so he could keep his job,” says Goldbach, laughing. “I guess you could call it a dark comedy.” It was good enough to catch McKellar’s eye — and to spark a friendship between the two writers. McKellar even hired Goldbach to co-write the movie Childstar with him, before Goldbach decided to break out on his own.
His TIFF film, Daydream Nation, which stars Kat Dennings, Andie MacDowell, Josh Lucas, and Rachel Blanchard, might just be that “breakout” movie he’s been hoping for.
