My vision for parks in Ward 21 is very much in sync with the city’s vision, and I have heard from community members that they support a strong park system. Over the years, in collaboration with residents and the parks department, we have revitalized many of our parks. These enhancements have been made possible through allocated city funding, money set aside through the development process and, on occasion, fundraising by residents.
Last year saw the opening of the new Cedarvale outdoor skating rink, and this year, new playgrounds are ready for action at Wells Hill Park; Arlington Parkette, where the playground was recently renamed to Sousa Mendes Playground; and Cedarvale Park in the back of the Leo Baeck Day School. This last project was funded entirely by the school, although it is available for community use. Next summer, children will have fun cooling off in a water play feature in Cedarvale Park south of the tennis courts.
I encourage you to become engaged with our parks. There is an increasing number of groups who assume stewardship of parks city-wide. We have our own — the Friends of Cedarvale. You can see what they have been doing by visiting their blog friendsofcedarvale. tumblr.com, or contact them at friendsofcedarvale@gmail.com.
Toronto’s system of parks and trails is one of the city’s greatest assets and is integral to the quality of life that Torontonians enjoy. The city’s parks vision focuses on creating outdoor spaces that are welcoming, well maintained, safe and sustainable.
