Moving ahead with new initiatives

As we arrive in the fall, I’m organizing campaigns that follow up on many initiatives I’ve presented to council, including the reinstatement of a Markham Sport & Fitness Council, and as chair of Markham’s information technology and communications committee, creating a report on our city’s road map to being a truly “smart city.”

Of important note to Thornhill residents and Markham generally will be the final determination of funding sources for storm water management.

In the coming months, we will be finalizing our new official plan, including a new parkland dedication policy, of which I am in favour of requiring more green space as part of new developments in Markham.

I have also recently submitted proposals for the 2014 budget, including a gazebo at Duncan Park; automated public toilets at some parks; an Organic Children’s Learning Garden; and park fitness equipment and pathway lighting.

Locally, I am working with residents and businesses to finalize the Thornhill Revitalization Bylaw.  A major piece of that project is the rezoning and redevelopment of the former Canac Kitchens location on John Street. Community consultation for the Yonge Street Corridor Study will continue this fall, as will the first disbursement of funds under Section 37 of the Planning Act toward improving community amenities in the west part of Thornhill.

As always, I welcome your thoughts and comments. You can email me at hshore@markham.ca, and you can find more information at www.howardshore.ca.
