Media mogul David Thomson, reported by Forbes to be Canada’s richest man, has begun massive renovations at his Roxborough Drive home. In March, the Toronto East York Committee of Adjustment approved Thomson’s plans to build a two-storey addition on his acquired lot at 200 Roxborough Dr., which he will then connect to his three-storey home at 196 Roxborough Dr. The local resident required four variances, including one to permit nearly two times the maximum floor space–to–lot area ratio.
“It sounds to me like he’s a fellow who has lived in the neighbourhood for many years, and as a neighbour, he’s just doing everything within his rights,” said Coun. Kristyn Wong-Tam.
The councillor said she hasn’t heard any complaints about the unusual renovation plan and suspects Thomson had mindful conversations with the local ratepayers association before moving ahead.
George Fulton, a neighbour, said he has no problem with the renovation. “As long as he doesn’t interfere with other people and their property, why would anyone stop him?” he asked.
Thomson declined to comment.
