Corey Haim honoured in Thornhill service

Cause of death of the 38-year-old actor still unknown

Friends and family members gathered at a private, invitation-only funeral service in Thornhill to say goodbye to local actor Corey Haim last month.

“It was a small gathering,” said Marla Stewart, secretary of the Steeles Memorial Chapel, where the service was held on March 16. The scene outside, however, was quite different. “It was like a circus,” Stewart said. “We had a lot of media here.”

Haim’s early acting roles included the CBC-aired series The Edison Twins in the early to mid 1980s. Haim earned Hollywood heartthrob status with roles in films such as Joel Schumacher’s 1987 vampire film Lost Boys. In a statement released last month, California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced that his office was investigating an “illegal and massive prescription drug ring” linked to Haim.

“Corey Haim’s death is yet another tragedy linked to the growing problem of prescription-drug abuse,” he said in the statement. Haim died on March 10 at age 38. The official cause of death has not been released. He was laid to rest in Pardes Shalom Cemetery in Maple.
