Tim Hortons makes a foray into inefficiency by renaming all of its coffee sizes

As of next Monday, if you want to order a small coffee at Tim Hortons, you will have to order an “extra” small. The medium coffee we once knew will become the new small. Large will officially become medium and the extra large will become large. All of this is to make way for the new extra large — a 24 oz. cup. Confused yet? We are.

The prices will remain the same, and so will the cup measurements, which begs the question: isn’t that a lot of work just to make room for one more cup size? Of course it is. Timmies could easily have easily called the new size a “jumbo,” or, going in the vein of Starbucks, something Italian-sounding, like “immenso.”

Besides, when was the last time you heard someone in a Tim Hortons lineup say, “hey, you know what this place needs? An extra extra large.” (That’s a crazy idea: Timmies could have just called it the “extra extra large.”)

Gluttony-wise, it could be worse. Last year, Starbucks introduced a 31 oz. cup in the U.S. called the Trenta, which holds a volume slightly larger than the average size of a human stomach.
