This Week In Sound: Record Store Day 2013, Gold & Youth, Young Galaxy, Royal Canoe

Every Monday, we round up the most exciting music news happening in Toronto. In this edition: Record Store Day 2013, new tracks for Gold & Youth and Young Galaxy, a new album for Royal Canoe and the premiere of a documentary that follows the Toronto music scene.

There’s another reason to celebrate April 20, and it’s Record Store Day. Every year, on the third Saturday of April, a slew of new releases is dropped at independent retailers, and this year is no exception. While the full list of releases has yet to be revealed, we’re drooling with anticipation at what’s currently on the table: music from Austra, Neil Young, a Black Keys and Iggy Pop 7-inch, Calexico, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, R. Kelly, Jethro Tull, Brian Eno, Jimi Hendrix, Ra Ra Riot, Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright and The XX.

Vancouver’s Gold & Youth revealed a new single last week for their soon-to-be-released debut full-length, Beyond Wilderness, out May 14 on local label Arts & Crafts. And it’s about time — we’ve been waiting with bated breath for just about anything from the band since their first single was released last year. Haunting, ethereal and edgy, these guys are definitely channeling ’80s new wave blended with synth-heavy electro.

Young Galaxy also released the second single for their upcoming record, Ultramarine, which happens to be a remix by Ghosting Season of their song “Fall For You.” The album is out via Paper Bag Records on April 23. And because Paper Bag has been all about the remixes lately, they’ve put out a compilation playlist that you can stream here.

Toronto label Nevado Records recently signed Winnipeg natives Royal Canoe. The pop-driven sextet also announced that they’re finishing up their sophomore album, which is slated for release sometime this summer.

Lastly, after releasing a very mysterious trailer, the guys behind the documentary The Scene: an Exploration of Music in Toronto have an official premiere date. On March 23, as part of the Canadian Film Fest, the movie screens at the Royal Cinema in Little Italy. The documentary follows three local bands as they try to make it in the city, as well as interviews with Bif Naked, Steve “Lips” Kudlow, Robb Reiner, members of Tokyo Police Club and more. The venue only seats 450, so grab your tickets while you can.
