Good news for Toronto’s east end: a historic restaurant that was open for 90 years before closing is making a triumphant return. Reliable Fish & Chips opened its doors in 1930, but closed its doors earlier this year when the building was sold to new owners.
The fish ‘n chips spot was only closed for a few months and, during its closure, has seen a bit of a facelift. In recent weeks, the inside of Reliable Fish ‘n Chips, which was named after Reliable Toy Company, has received a fresh coat of paint and undergone other changes, including new branding and new tables and chairs.
Reliable Fish ‘N Chips’ closure was originally slated as a permanent one, and it appeared that Toronto would lose one of its oldest restaurants. The Leslieville spot remained a neighbourhood staple throughout many changes to the area and the business’ ownership. Over the years, people flocked to the eatery for the affordable menu items, many of which are under $10, and the selection of fish for the main dish, including cod, haddock, basa, and even wild Pacific salmon. Homemade burgers and sandwiches are also available on the menu.
But, in early 2022, the owner posted a notice saying that the restaurant’s last day in business would be January 21, as a result of the sale of the building. But, Reliable Fish ‘n Chips is born again, opening for business at 954 Queen St. E on June 1.
