The owner of Dancap Productions, Inc. predicts his Toronto-based theatre production company will return within a few years after announcing in May that it will not offer a 2013 subscription season.
“I think of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat,” said Aubrey Dan. “During the seven really good years, they put grain in storage, so during the lean years they’d be okay. The economy since 2008 has really gone through those lean years. In 2014 or 2015, we’ll be out.”
In a May prepared statement, Dancap withdrew its 2013 season because Dan did not foresee “enough quality shows” in Toronto’s future.
In the meantime, Dan said his company will enter “hibernation mode.” He explained the downtime may be necessary for Dancap to reevaluate its productions until it can return “stronger than ever.”
“It’s a possibility that he could come back,” said Coun. Gary Crawford, chair for the Mayor's Task Force on the Arts and Theatres. He said he thinks the theatre industry will recover after the recent recession and decreased American tourism even out. Until then, Crawford said Toronto still has a healthy appetite for Dan’s Broadway-style shows.
“He’s one of those people you really don’t want to see leave,” he said.
