Taste Test: Our expert panel picks the best ice cream from all the wild flavours in Toronto

The cityโ€™s ice cream artisans are creating wild flavours far from vanilla. Our resident chef Grant van Gameren enlists chefs Brad Moore and Ian Kapitan of hot new eatery Old School to taste T.O.โ€™s wackiest flavours.

WINNER:
Beer and brown breadย
Bang Bang Ice Cream,ย 93 Ossingtonย Ave., $5.35
โ€œThe beer one nailed it really well. Itโ€™s absolutely what I expected,โ€ says Moore. โ€œThis is one of the more original ones,โ€ adds van Gameren.

Kitchen sink
Chocolateria,ย 361 Roncesvallesย Ave., $3.80
โ€œItโ€™s good, but I canโ€™t differentiate more than aย few flavours, chocolate, mint and a hint of crispy crunch,โ€ says van Gameren. Moore says it tastesย like peppermint patties.

White chocolateย macadamia nutย
Soma, 32 Tank House Ln., $4.55
โ€œI donโ€™t get a lot of macadamia flavour jumpingย out at me,โ€ says Moore, and Kapitan agrees.ย Van Gameren says the cookie flavour is notย what he expected.

Toronto pothole ย
Summerโ€™s, 101 Yorkvilleย Ave., $4.95
โ€œItโ€™s very chocolate and very typical,โ€ says Moore of the rocky road-style ice cream. Kapitan adds, โ€œItโ€™d be better if there were chunks of marshmallows in it.โ€ And van Gameren agrees that itโ€™s missingย something.

Blood orange chocolate swirlย
Sweet Olenkaโ€™s, 1050 Queen St. W., $4.50
โ€œGreat texture, but I donโ€™t get a strong bloodย orange flavour,โ€ says Moore. โ€œI get the orangeย taste afterwards, but the chocolate and orangeย donโ€™t jump out at me.โ€

Blue cheeseย
Delight, 3040 Dundasย St. W., $4.25
โ€œThe blue cheese comes through, but initially the flavour is a bit vanilla,โ€ says Moore. โ€œIf youโ€™re going to do blue cheese, it should be more bold. Iโ€™d like some chunks of blue cheese in there,โ€ says van Gameren.

Soursop
Aliโ€™s Roti, 1446 Queen St. W., $1.65
โ€œIโ€™m getting more cream and vanilla with a subtle soursop flavour,โ€ says Kapitan. โ€œItโ€™s clean, light, straightforward and simple,โ€ says Moore, whileย van Gameren adds, โ€œItโ€™s a nice palate cleanser,ย nice and refreshing.โ€

Toronto traffic jamย
Dutch Dreams, 36 Vaughanย Rd., $3
โ€œThis one is the truest in terms of tasting likeย the ingredients. This one wins it for me,โ€ says Kapitan of the salted caramel ripple withย chocolate-covered pretzels. Van Gamerenย likes the addition of pretzels.

Caramel milk teaย
The Sweet Escape Patisserie,ย 24 Tank House Ln., $3
โ€œItโ€™s very astringent on the back end,โ€ saysย Kapitan, and Moore agrees that a bitter flavour ofย tea is present. โ€œI got the caramel, but it had aย bitter taste too,โ€ he says.
