Taste Test: Marc Thuet and Biana Zorich help us sort out T.O.’s eclair affair

Forget doughnuts and cupcakes, move over macarons, the eclair is the next big thing. The romantic French pastry is popping up in patisseries citywide, including one eclair-only outpost. So we invited the duo behind Petite Thuet, chef Marc Thuet and his wife Biana Zorich, to suss out the city’s best.

Marc’s pick
Roselle, 362 King St. E., 2 for $18
“I like the crispiness of the choux (the pastry dough) and the presentation,” says Thuet of the banana cream pie eclair.

Biana’s pick
Thobors, 627 Mt. Pleasant Rd., $4.25
“This one is the best for me as far as the choux and the custard,” says Zorich. “It’s classic and beautiful. I love it.”

Runner-up 
Nugateau, 717 Queen St. W., $4.50
“It’s a close runner-up because it’s an acquired taste, but nice flavour combo,” says Thuet of the maple bacon eclair.

Quintessential coffee 
Rahier, 1586 Bayview Ave., $4.35
“It looks good. The choux is fine, but the custard is too creamy,” says Zorich. Thuet adds, “It’s a bit too runny but tastes good.”

Very vanilla 
La Boheme, 2481 Yonge St., $5
“The texture is not right; it shouldn’t be that wide,” says Zorich. But Thuet adds that “the taste is there; it’s not bad.”

Creamy custard 
Amadeus, 7380 Bathurst St., $4.50
“This one is good,” starts Thuet. Zorich adds, “Vanilla with a chocolate glaze, I like that. This one is good.”
