T.O. gets trumped at CNE's grilled cheese cook-off

When it comes to Canada’s best grilled cheese, Toronto just can’t seem to cut it.

Top chefs from Toronto, Whistler, Wolfville (Nova Scotia), and Calgary gathered at the CNE today for what was billed at the "Grate Canadian Grilled Cheese Cook-Off."

Toronto’s Corbin Tomaszeski, chef at Holt’s Cafe, served up "The Spicy Shrimp" and "Chef Corbin’s Best Ever" to the judges. Unfortunately, his best wasn’t good enough.

In the end, the judges — food writers Rita DeMontis, Lucy Waverman, and Corey Mintz — selected Wolfville Chef Michael Howell’s "Panini Toscano" as the best they ever had.

But it was still all love between the competitors, which also included Chef Paul Rogalski from Calgary’s Rouge and Chef Melissa Craig from Whistler’s Bearfoot Bistro.

“This wonderful Cook–Off and my fellow chefs have all shown us that making a winning grilled cheese sandwich is simple – all you need is bread, your favourite Canadian cheese and some imagination," said Howell.

And, if we may add, some ketchup.
