Yitz’s Deli might be gone, but its food lives on in T.O.

Summerhill Market just announced that it will now carry several items from the Yitz’s product line.

A staple in the community for nearly 50 years, Yitz Penicier opened Yitz’s Delicatessen in 1972 at the corner of Avenue Road and Eglinton Avenue. The Jewish deli was a well-known spot in the neighbourhood when it was purchased in 2000 by Barry Silver, who realized the importance of keeping authentic, traditional Jewish food on the menu. All of the items sold at Yitz’s Delicatessen are made from scratch, in-house, including the smoked meats and hearty soups.

Those who frequented the deli over the years will recall the sausage-shaped door handles and traditional deli counter, where customers could buy everything from thinly-sliced pastrami to lox and cream cheese.

Yitz’s Delicatessen closed its doors for good on Dec. 1, 2019. Since then, Summerhill Market has been working closely with Silver to purchase his recipes and make them available once more to residents of the community. Silver passed away in November 2020, but according to sources at Summerhill Market, it was always his dream to see his recipes live on at the market.

A variety of Yitz’s Delicatessen recipes will live on at Sumemrhill Market, including Yitz’s potato latkes, vinegar coleslaw, smoked beef brisket, and matzo ball soup will all be available in store.
