To say air travel in Toronto hasn’t been easy lately is putting it mildly, with news of lost luggage, flight delays and a multitude of other headaches making headlines around the world. But one of the city’s airports is flying high having just been named one of the best in the world.
On Thursday, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport took to their Instagram account to announce the news.
“This is the 8th time we’ve won a prestigious Skytrax Award, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for helping us reach new heights,” they captioned the post.
The downtown airport was ranked in the top 10 in two Skytrax Airport Award categories in 2023, ranking in eighth spot in World’s Best Airports, under five million passengers and ranking ninth in North America’s Best Regional Airports category.
Notably absent from the awards was Toronto Pearson International Airport. Plagued with bad press over the last year, including ranking worst in the world for flight delays, Pearson only managed to place in 64th spot among the world’s t0p 100 airports — down 21 spots from last year.
The only other Canadian city to make the list was Calgary International Airport which landed in an impressive fifth spot in the Best regional Airports in North American category.
Regarded as the quality benchmark for the world airport industry, Skytrax is a UK-based airline and airport review and ranking site. The awards are compiled by surveying millions of travellers from around the world and asking them to rate their experiences from check-in times, to friendliness of airport staff and even cleanliness of washrooms.
The top five airports in the North American category included Houston Hobby, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, New York LGA, Denver and Calgary, while the world’s top airports for 2023 were Singapore Changi, Doha Hamad, Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Inchion, and Paris CDG.
