Last night, Vogue‘s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was on hand to pick up the People’s Voice award for fashion at the Webby Awards, which doles out trophies to the best of the ‘net. Giving the traditional five-word-speech, hers — “Sometimes, geeks can be chic” — shaped up to be the one of the most popular quotes of the night, which got us thinking about Toronto’s own chic geeks. Below, our five favourites.
Dan Levy – Though his thick-framed glasses and excessive pop-culture knowledge makes this TV personality a certified geek, his style of printed shirts, turtlenecks and cool kicks (not to mention his new gig as a Flare contributor) definitely gives Levy an edge in chicness.
Sarah Polley – She’s an actress, writer, director and political activist all at once — anyone that smart must be a huge nerd at heart. Though she’s said she’s not much of a fashion freak, her effortless bohemian style suggests otherwise.
Michael Cera – Even if he does play the same role in his all of his movies, he has a way of wearing trousers and rad graphic T-shirts that makes him all the more lovable.
Kristin Weckworth – She’s the owner of Toronto’s Magic Pony Shop, a store filled with whimsical art, fashion and books, which automatically makes her a really cute geek in our books.
Rick Moranis – Sure, he’s known for playing a bumbling nerd in such classics as Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but let’s face it: no one can wear a bow tie and a pair of khakis like this guy (and he gives Levy a run for his money in the specs department, too).
