With winter comes many safety considerations for parents. Canada’s largest Personal Injury Law Firm, Diamond and Diamond Lawyers, is aware of the diverse challenges and risks the season can present. The firm’s Managing Partner, Sandra Zisckind, shares six essential tips to help parents ensure the safety of their children during the winter months.

1. Bundle Up for the Cold

“Winter clothing isn’t just about keeping warm; it’s a crucial element of safety,” says Sandra Zisckind. Dressing your children in layers is essential to protect them from developing a cold or, even worse, hypothermia. It’s crucial to provide children with insulated and waterproof outer layers such as a coat, toque, gloves and a scarf to help shield them from harsh winter conditions.

2. Always Be Mindful Of Ice

Icy sidewalks and driveways can be treacherous. This can be especially true for children who aren’t strong on their feet. For parents, it’s not only important to take preventive measures around your home to lessen the likelihood of slip and fall incidents, but it’s also equally as important to reinforce safe walking techniques during the winter season. “Be vigilant about ice around your home and neighbourhood. Salt or sand your walkways to prevent slipping, and ensure your children wear appropriate footwear with good traction,” says Sandra Zisckind.

3. Safety on the Roads

Ensuring proper road safety is paramount if you plan to hit the road in the winter months. It’s important to check your vehicle’s tires, brakes, and fluid levels before packing up and leaving home. Additionally, you must take the time to secure your child’s car seat in your vehicle. Please reference the Government of Ontario’s guide for car seats if you have any questions before heading out on a trip with children.

4. Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Winter activities can be deceptively exhausting for children. As a result, it’s important to make sure that your children are getting an adequate amount of food and water. “Make sure your children stay hydrated and well-fed, especially while participating in outdoor activities. Pack healthy snacks and warm beverages to keep their energy levels up,” says Zisckind.

5. Mind Your Surroundings

Winter brings a unique set of risks, from snow-covered tree branches to frozen ponds. As such, it’s important to teach your children to be aware of their surroundings. “Stay away from areas with warning signs, and discourage risky activities on frozen bodies of water,” emphasizes Zisckind.

6. Plan for Emergencies

Accidents can happen even with the best precautions. “Have an emergency plan in place. Teach your children how to call for help, memorize key phone numbers, and ensure they know their home address,” says Zisckind. It’s an extra layer of protection that can make a significant difference.

Conclusion

Winter is a magical time, but safety should always be a priority. By following these tips you can help ensure your children enjoy the winter months to the fullest without compromising their well-being.
