Shop Talk: Mi Janeaux, a Woodbridge staple, opens a fashion boutique in North York

Mary Di Pede has already enjoyed much success. She’s gone from opening her first Mi Janeaux boutique in Woodbridge 21 years ago to styling Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese to participating in on-air segments for the show, but that doesn’t mean she’s resting on her laurels. Yesterday, Di Pede opened a second, 1,300-square-foot Mi Janeaux location in North York.

The new store is quite different than the Woodbridge location. The inner decor is a stark contrast to the Woodbridge location’s modern feel; it’s French in style, evoking a very soft feminine look, reinforced by warm lighting from unique-looking crystal chandeliers. In terms of goods, the Woodbridge location features more evening wear, while Di Pede says the Avenue Road location focuses “a bit more on casual and day-to-day wear.”

Housing everything from clothing, shoes, purses and jewellery to antique furniture, Mi Janeaux is looking to be a one-stop shop for women. The clothing is mainly purchased from Los Angeles and Italy, selected by Di Pede herself and priced conservatively.

“You can buy a dress here for $80, or you can spend $500,” says Di Pede.

On the racks are both popular and up-and-coming labels such as Black Halo, Tadashi Shoji, Stop Staring!, Hale Bob and more. Currently, some of Di Pede’s favourite pieces are the Black Halo pant suit ($395) made from 100 per cent wool crepe with two slip pockets, and a dress from Stop Staring! ($200) that should draw eyes for its great silhouette and fit.
