Budding Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes establishes new scholarship program for local youth

It took Toronto about five minutes to fall in love with budding Toronto Raptors star and current NBA Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes. Now, the young phenom is making his commitment to the local community felt by establishing a new scholarship in collaboration with Skilled Trades College of Canada.

Four scholarships will be awarded to Black and Indigenous students “to kickstart their career in the skilled trades industry.”

Applications are open beginning today and closing on Sept. 30.

โ€œWe want to jumpstart peopleโ€™s futures and expose them to exciting career opportunities they may not have considered before,โ€ said Barnes. โ€œThrough this scholarship with STC, we hope to empower the next generation of tradespeople and present them with new life opportunities. There are multiple routes to career success and the trades are one of them.โ€
