For 30 years Southern Accent has been enlivening the Annex with its Mardi Gras flamboyance, but now Little Italy is where it’s at. The new space still maintains the Victorian house’s witchy flair, complete with a variety of coloured lights and decor reminiscent of New Orleans. The stalwart eatery serves up a mix of Cajun, Creole and soul dishes that offer diners a chance to compare the oft-conflated cuisines. Of Southern Accent’s two jambalayas (Creole and Cajun), the tomato-based Creole option is a bright, zesty option when compared to the labour-intensive Cajun variety. The Cajun jambalaya is nuttier with richer flavours, thanks to its base: two-hour caramelized onions. Andouille, ham and chicken are baked with the onion base and a spice mix. Shrimp and rice finish the dish.
