About the Restaurant

The next time you take a stroll along Queen West during lunch, try not to be enticed by the delicious, exotic aroma of traditional Sri Lankan fare wafting from Saffron Spice Kitchen (hint: it's nearly impossible). Although the place also serves up salads and soups, itโ€™s the butter (or tandoori) chicken, curry lamb or the roti that will surely get your senses going. The roti here, however, isn't your typical roti, like the Indian places scattered around the area. Saffron Spice Kitchen's kothu roti is, in fact, a Sri Lankanโ€“style roti thatโ€™s packed with your choice of curried chicken, lamb, seafood or egg ($5 for a small or $7.50 for a large). The meat is traditionally chopped up and cooked on a heated iron sheet in a roti made from special Tamil grains. Word to the wise: Donโ€™t forget the mango lassi on the side.
