Nunu
Toronto, ON M6J 1J2
For nearly 30 years, Nunu Ketgela has been working as a professional chef, and 10 of those has been at her namesake restaurant. Nunu is Toronto's hippest location for Ethiopian fusion eats. The restaurant's menu pulls from north and east African cuisine and approaches to food. The goal is food that is delicious, healthy, honest and won't leave you feeling like you can't move. That means the menu is centred around fresh and seasonal foods and, using its own farm in Oakville during the summer, as locally sourced as it can be. The menu is thus split between "herbivore" and "carnivore," with the herbivore choices all being vegan as they cook with vegetable-based ghee. Enjoy many different varieties of wat, the Ethiopian equivalent of a stew, or enjoy a colourful plate of spreads served atop a flatbread for ripping then dipping. Nunu closes when Nunu Ketgela decides it does, so there never really is a bad time to stop in for some food or a cocktail.
