About the Restaurant

This month marks the opening of two of the summerโ€™s most highly anticipated restaurants: The Chase (which opened Monday) and The Chase Fish & Oyster (which opened Friday). Both are projects from owner Steven Salm, with Michael Steh โ€” previously of Reds โ€” as executive chef.

The two restaurants are located in Torontoโ€™s historical Dineen Building. The downstairs space hosts The Chase Fish & Oyster, which offers a casual oyster and seafood experience. Meanwhile, upstairs, The Chase offers a โ€œcasually elegantโ€ approach with modern American cuisine in a blinginโ€™ chandelier-filled dining room and an 80-person rooftop terrace with a view of the Financial Districtโ€™s towers.

The downstairs space has a raw bar, and a menu highlight is the massive seafood platter known as The Bay Platter ($110), featuring oysters, clams, tuna, crab, shrimp, scallops and lobster. Additional items include the likes of a California roll with Dungeness crab, avocado and sweet corn salad ($19), oyster poโ€™ boy sliders ($11), fried chicken with a smoked cheddar potato bun ($20) or a burger ($20). Nigel Finley, formerly of Catch, is chef de cuisine.

Upstairs at The Chase, where Amira Becarevic (previously from Epic at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel) is chef de cuisine, there are appetizers like mozzarella ($18) or beef tartare ($16). For mains, thereโ€™s a whole roasted halibut for two ($95) or whole roasted chicken for two ($71), stuffed with foie gras, apricots, pistachios and brioche, as well as a grilled ribeye ($52) and pasta like the smoked ricotta ravioli ($25).

With Anton Potvin (who owned the now-closed Niagara Street Cafรฉ) acting as GM and sommelier, expect a large wine list, plenty of beer offerings and a variety of cocktails, as well.
