Finally, Aussie pies have arrived in Toronto, thanks to Kanga Aussie Meat Pies. And if you, like us, didn’t know what Aussie pies were before you heard of Kanga, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. What’s an Aussie pie? Compared to traditional British meat pies, the Down Under version is made with a puff pastry crust, and it has a heartier filling, with gravy or sauce. It’s also conveniently hand-held. The pies are a popular on-the-go food in Australia and New Zealand. Behind Kanga’s Aussie-style pies are Erynn Mayes and Megan Chan, who, after spending some time in Australia, began to test and develop, bringing their pies to the Toronto food scene. Pick up one of the pies for $6 to $8 in steak and bacon, butter chicken, creamy zucchini or pepper steak.
