Torontonians may not be familiar with Brioche Dorée, but Parisians certainly are. Dishing out goods since 1976, the successful French café-bakery is taking baby steps into the Canuck market. After opening at kiosk at Pearson Airport, the chain has just opened its first downtown Toronto location (with more to come), offering brioche, baguettes, pastries and more.

Found on the ground floor of the new condo at King and Bathurst, the space features lofty ceilings, wood and metal accents and a wall of windows. Communal tables dotted with mini jade plants — ideal for a quick bite — line the centre of the room, while a selection of magazines tempts those prone to lingering.

The eats range from artisanal breads to brioche to various types of croissants: butter, chocolate and almond. Pastries include the likes of apple turnovers and apricot danishes, while a selection of fruit tartlets beckons from the far corner.

Heavier fare, which rotates depending on the time of day, is also available. For breakfast, folks can mow down on croissants stuffed with various fillings, such as leek and parmesan, or dream of Montmartre while clutching a croque monsieur. Both sweet and savoury crêpes are also available.

Lunch hour sees the arrival of sandwiches, like the Parisien with ham and brie, and a selection of quiches. Additionally, this location is the first to offer evening eats on the weekend (think charcuterie and the like).

Various coffee-based beverages are served (there are two house blends of espresso) and, once the space receives its liquor license, French wines and local brews will be served.
