Open Window Bakery, a Toronto fixture for more than 50 years, has closed its doors at all seven locations across the city.
The company employs more than 250 people and, aside from their own locations, provides baked goods — including breads, buns, bagels, cakes and pastries — to roughly 500 independent outlets and chains across Ontario.
Attempts to contact management Wednesday morning were unsuccessful but an automated phone message at the head office location says "the office is now closed" and that "the order desk will be closed for about two weeks and there will be no product deliveries."
According to the CBC, the family-owned business issued a short statement saying they were working to keep the business going and would know more next week.
The broadcaster reported that employees were told Monday night that the company would be closing and some received reference letters encouraging them to seek work elsewhere.
