One of Canada’s greatest basketball players is reportedly a candidate for the position of Toronto Raptors head coach.
According to The Athletic, former Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash recently met with the Raptors to discuss the vacant position.
Nash, who is 49-years-old and grew up in Victoria, B.C., spent two seasons as head coach of the Nets, before it was decided that they were parting ways in the 2022-23 season. Nash posted a 94-67 record as coach, which also included two playoff appearances.
Previously, Nash had worked as player development consultant for the Golden State Warriors, and is considered by some to be one of the best point guards in NBA history. His NBA career spanned 18 years, including stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers, and during that time, he was honoured with named an All-Star eight times, and won consecutive MVP awards in 2005 and 2006.

The Raptors’ head coaching position is up for grabs following last month’s firing of Nick Nurse. Nurse had spent five years with the team as head coach in addition to five years as an assistant under Dwayne Casey, now coach of the Detroit Pistons. Nurse coached the team to its first NBA Championship in 2019 and made the playoffs three of the last five years. But, something had to give as the team underperformed this season, missing the playoffs after losing the play-in game to the Chicago Bulls.
