Aaron Sherman, 43, has been arrested after a recent investigation into a robbery at a midtown gallery.
Police responded to an alarm call at the Oden Wagner Gallery, located at 196 Davenport Rd., early in the morning last month.
According to Nicholas Wagner, a managing director at the gallery, the price of the three paintings — Wild Fields, by Greg Harris; Still Life with Flowers; by Weidong Wang; and Seated Lady with Fan, by Zhao Kaolin — totals $73,000. Mr. Wagner declined to comment on the individual value of each piece or why they may have been targeted for theft.
Mr. Wagner said he could only recall one other theft in the previous 20 years. When asked if the theft has affected the atmosphere at the gallery, he said it has not. “Business goes on, life goes on.”
Det. Const. Alan Bartlett of 53 Division said break and enters are not uncommon in the Davenport and Avenue Road neighbourhood. “It’s an unusual situation, in that art has been taken, but break and enters are not unusual in the area,” he said.
In this case, there were two people caught on camera removing three paintings from the premises. Police are still searching for the second suspect and the works of art.
“We are doing our best to locate these pieces, intact,” Bartlett said.
