A recent community meeting to discuss plans for a contentious townhouse development turned “raucous,” according to Coun. James Pasternak.
The meeting was chaired by Menkes Development, who recently purchased a six-acre parcel of land from the TDSB in the Westminster area, near Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue. Menkes representatives were present at the meeting, along with city planning officials, to answer questions about the 20-unit townhouse project.
But Pasternak, who has voiced concerns about the development in the past, said the atmosphere was less than welcoming.
“I think most of the response was negative,” he said.
Residents have been voicing concerns about density and potential infrastructure problems since Menkes announced their plans last February.
Cathie Ferguson, the city’s senior planner for the project, echoed Pasternak’s statement. “Some people actually did ask questions,” she said. "But some people just threw out accusations." Ferguson said she invited residents to make an appointment at her office to view the project plans and traffic studies first-hand.
“We heard a lot of concerns,” she said, “and as we always do, we will attempt to address these concerns in our final report. But some people will never be completely happy when change comes to their area”
A representative for Menkes Development was not available for comment.
