Customizing your meal is a trick many health-conscious diners try. But is it a real calorie saver? We sent a regular pizza and a light-toppings version from Lil’ Baci, which has just opened a new midtown location, to the lab to find out.

Lil’ Baci is known for serving up pizzas inspired by the cuisine of southern Italy. Topped with tomato, mozzarella, sausage, chilies and basil, the fiamma is a classic pizza for a big appetite — and it shows in its fat and sodium content.

Lil’ baci custom fiamma pizza
We asked for a fiamma with half the sausage and half the mozzarella of the standard version. By going easy with the toppings, over 450 calories were cut out and the fat was almost halved. The sodium content was down by about a quarter.
