In the wake of recent financial woes, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has announced it will bring in former chief general manager David Gunn to review the budget and recommend efficiencies. Gunn, who has also worked for the New York City Transit Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, served as the TTC’s chief general manager from 1995 to 1999.
“We chose him because he has familiarity with the system,” said TTC chair, Karen Stintz. “He had been involved at a time when the TTC had significant budget problems."
Gunn resided in the Bayview area during his tenure with the TTC but currently lives in Nova Scotia where he is retired. Most recently, he was employed as the president of Amtrak but was fired by the board of directors in 2005. In the past, Gunn has been critical of some aspects of the TTC, including opposing any new subway construction, but Stintz said she does not foresee any conflicts. “He has his opinions,” she said. “And we may not utilize all his recommendations, but we are looking forward to his expertise.”
